Interface Design and Evaluation (IDE) Section performs interdisciplinary human-computer interaction (HCI) research. Two themes are present in our research projects: human system integration and audio interfaces. The human system integration (HSI) research is directed at understanding limitations of current Naval systems particularly in terms of human-system interfaces, developing improvements in these interfaces, and implementing and assessing these improvements. The HSI research is collaborative with other organizations, sometimes major defense contractors. We incorporate aspects of systems analysis, interface design, software engineering, and systems evaluation. The audio interface research uses a sophisticated audio laboratory to expand our understanding of how non-speech audio can be used to manage attention and convey information. We are exploring technologies for augmented audio for the soldier, ways to enhance the performance of multi-display workstation operators, and ways to improve the use of audio in sonar systems.
