Environmental Visualization

This research is a collaboration between:

The objective of this work is to develop, evaluate, streamline and transition an environmental effects visualization capability for air strike and amphibious warfare operations that allows the Navy forecaster to produce and deliver tactically relevant meteorology and oceanographic information to warfighters, including environmental effects on sensors and weapons. This capability will be developed from an information interaction model that reflects the information delivery requirements to the warfighter using cognitive and systems analyses of workflow and visualization processes at METOC shore and ship facilities.

The goal is to develop a capability that will enable forecasters to more automatically gather critical METOC data from various sources and produce mission-based visualizations and customer products in a timely manner well within the tactical commander's decision cycle. This capability will address the weather forecasting and customer needs deficiencies that occurred in Desert Storm, Kosovo, and Iraq. It will enable the METOC community to produce products and align its processes to the rapid planning and decision cycles in current air and amphibious warfare. A rapid environmental visualization capability will also support the assessment of alternative Courses of Action (COAs) thereby increasing the value and impact of METOC products.
