Analysis of Advanced METOC Direct Interaction and Workflow Support Technology

This research is a collaborative effort with:

The initial effort was focused on an assessment of an operation CDROM developed to provide background on Persian Gulf Meteorology and Oceanography (METOC).

An experiment was conducted to compare use of this CDROM with paper and web to complete five standard METOC tasks. METOC personnel at Patuxent River Naval Air Station, MD and the Naval Pacific Meteorology and Oceanography Facility, San Diego were used as subjects. The results showed slower retrieval times with web (not due to slow internet). The CDROM was generally as fast as paper. There was unanimous preference for CDROM, and more images were pulled from the CDROM into the briefing task. The current effort is to investigate METOC processes to support real-time strikes, including an HCI and workflow assessment of a regional METOC modeling technology (TAMS/RT). This work will also examine the types of visualizations that the METOC community currently uses.
