Code 6113 promotes the use of new and improved energy and power sources for Naval applications via the study and invention of new power sources, power source components and the methods to fabricate them. The group explores topics ranging energy harvesting for micropower to new materials for large-scale power production. Emphasis is on electrochemical devices such as fuel cells and batteries, with underpinnings in materials science and biology and fuels, and also microbiological methods for fuel production and electrical conduction. The new power/energy sources are designed for sensors, communication devices and vehicles in collaboration with other NRL divisions. Group members also serve as advisors on energy issues related to the Navy, USMC, DoD, and IC.
