  Materials Synthesis and Processing Section    

Research activities are directed at synthesis and processing of unique materials for naval applications. Current research focuses on stabilized metal nanoclusters for chemical sensing and nanoelectronic applications, low dielectric polymers for radome and microelectronic applications, high dielectric polymers for capacitor applications, electric field actuated ionic gel polyelectrolytes for optical lens applications, synthesis and passivation of energetic metal nanoclusters and nanoparticles. Low dielectric polymers (aliphatic fluorocarbon thermoset systems) are synthesized and evaluated as interconnects for microelectronics and as composite matrix resins for radomes. High dielectric polymers (sulfonated imidazole systems) are synthesized and evaluated for capacitor applications. Proton conducting polymers for applications as actuators are also under consideration.
