The Functional Nanomaterials and Devices special project area encompasses basic and applied research into the novel electronic, chemical, and optical properties of nanoscale materials and the insertion of these materials in DoD-relevant applications.
Its focus includes:
- Synthesis, characterization, and assembly of well-defined nanoscale materials such as nanocrystals, nanowires, and nanotubes. These nanostructured materials may range from elemental structures to heterostructures, with tailored optical behaviors as well as controlled doping and carrier transport properties.
- Understanding and control of how fundamental properties change when a nanomaterial is incorporated in environments ranging from isolation to functional architectures at different size scales for electronics, photonics, and sensors.
- The role of surfaces and interfaces such as heterojunctions and nano/bio interfaces, which are critical to the behavior of low-dimensional materials.
