Facilities

Two fully instrumented real-scale fire research chambers for testing small (28m3) and large (300m3) compartment fires. Instrumentation includes complete computer automation, continuous gas analyzers, FTIR, oxygen monitors, visible and IR cameras, and laser based droplet size and velocity visualization system.

  • Computerized gas chromatographs.
  • Dedicated high-speed data collection and manipulation computers.
  • Pressurizable 0.3 and 5 m3 chambers with continuous gas analyzers.
  • A 324 m3 pressurizable chamber to simulate submarine compartment and enclosure fires. Instrumentation associated with the chamber includes temperature and radiation sensors, continuous gas analyzers, closed circuit television, and computerized data collection and data visualization displays.
  • An engineering layout for large-scale quantitative study of flow proportioning equipment.
  • Special ovens for testing aging properties of firefighting agents.
  • A 50' x 50' fire test chamber with variable flow overhead hood and side wall louvers to control the effects of ventilation.
  • A 10,000 ft2 mini-deck which affords capabilities for studying characteristics and suppression of aircraft carrier flight deck fires with 30 knot wind capability for study of flight deck fires and suppression techniques. This includes the capability of generating winds of up to 30 knots and of dispensing AFFF from nozzles imbedded in the deck, as on actual aircraft carriers.
  • Facilities for conducting all of the fire and related qualifications tests (except toxicity) under the Military Specification for Aqueous Film Forming Foam (MIL-F-24385).
  • Two self-propelled mobile instrument vans for remote field tests.
  • Small-scale plexi-glass chamber for water mist suppression studies of gaseous and liquid fuels.
  • Forced convection boundary layer apparatus to study combustion of solid fuels and their suppression by water mist and Spectraline® IR diagnostic for flames.
