Chesapeake Bay Fire Test Facility (Code
Overview Video Clip
Concerned with all aspects of Navy fire safety, particularly as related
to aircraft, flight decks, submarines and interior ship conflagrations.
The facility provides a vital link between laboratory testing and full
scale, proof of concept on the ex-USS Shadwell.
Combustion Modeling and Scaling Section (Code
Concerned with numerical simulation and experimental validation of fire
processes including growth, spread and suppression. It is also involved
in combustion scaling as it relates to fires in confined (submarines),
semi-confined (below decks), and open (weather decks) spaces.
Combustion Dynamics Section
Concerned with the chemistry, physics and dynamics of combustion and suppression
processes primarily by an experimental approach.
Shipboard Fire Scaling Section
(Code 6186) - ex-USS Shadwell
Operates and maintains the ex-USS
Shadwell (LSD-15), the Navy's full-scale "real-scale"
damage control facility dedicated to integrated research, development,
test and evaluation studies on active and passive fire protection, flooding
and chemical (simulants) defense.
The Shadwell has recently been used for major demonstrations
aimed at reduced manning for damage control as part of the Damage Control
Automation for Reduced Manning (DC-ARM) program. Major modifications are
underway to have modern magazines and a hanger bay. Shadwell
also plays a major role in studying the vulnerability of Navy Platforms
to fire and flooding.
The Shadwell publications
list and the ex-USS
Shadwell Calendar (Produced by Calendars Net) are also viewable
Theoretical Chemistry (Code 6189)
Concerned with the fundamental understanding of the chemical and electronic
properties of materials, surfaces, nanowires, clusters, and molecules.
