The Naval Research Laboratory Military Support Division and VXS-1 (formerly known as the Flight Support Detachment) provide airborne research platforms for the Naval Research Laboratory, the United States Navy, U.S. Government, and it's contract agencies.

Located onboard the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC, the Military Support Division (Code 1400) is responsible for the scheduling, planning, and payment processing of airborne projects. Additionally, all military administration for the Laboratory is handled by the division.

Picture of P3 at PAXVXS-1 (Code 1600) maintains a fleet of three uniquely-configured, research-modified Lockheed NP-3D "Orion" aircraft, two RC-12s, and over 200 unmanned aerial systems. Located onboard the Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, MD, VXS-1 is responsible for the training, qualifications, and proficiency of all assigned personnel, as well as the maintenance of the research aircraft, and detachment coordination.

Committed to safety, NRL has logged over 64,000 flight hours and completed over 42 years of accident free flying. This committment to safety has been recognized by VXS-1 being awarded the Chief of Naval Operations Aviation Safety Award.
