The National Research Council, through its Associateship Programs office, conducts a national competition to award positions as guest researchers at participating laboratories to outstanding scientists and engineers at recent postdoctoral levels. The objectives are to provide to postdoctoral scientists and engineers of unusual promise and ability opportunities for research on problems largely of their own choice, but also compatible with the interests of the sponsoring laboratories, and to contribute thereby to the overall efforts of the federal laboratories.
NRL's NRC Program
In the program sponsored by the Naval Research Laboratory, the NRC Research Associate is a guest investigator, analogous to a postdoctoral fellowship or similar temporary program in a university. The Associate proposes a research program in his or her application, and is in residence at NRL during the period of the Associateship. Initial positions are for two years. Applicants are encouraged to define research projects that can be completed productively within this time; at the discretion of NRL, up to one additional year may be arranged to complete work satisfactorily.
Associateships at NRL are awarded to U.S. citizens with a Ph.D., Sc.D., or other earned research doctoral degree recognized in U.S. academic circles as equivalent to the Ph.D., who have not held that degree for more than five years before the time of award. Associateships may also be awarded to persons who can present acceptable evidence of having completed all the formal academic requirements for one of these degrees before starting tenure. Applicants must have demonstrated superior ability for creative research. Travel and relocation expenses are paid.
Code 7210's Opportunities
The Radio/Infrared/Optical Sensors Branch of the Remote Sensing Division at NRL (Code 7210) offers a variety of areas for research in astrophysics in which Associateships may be awarded. Many are for research in optical, infrared, or radio astronomy, applied to studies of stellar astrophysics (especially through optical interferometry), the interstellar medium, star formation, supernovae and supernova remnants, pulsars, starbursts and active galaxies, and astrometry. Others are for research in remote sensing of the coastal environment, particularly with the application of imaging spectrometry. Projects in the development of innovative instrumentation for imaging (including interferometry) and spectroscopy (especially imaging spectrometry) in the optical, infrared, and radio regimes are also possible. Three application reviews are held each year, in February, June, and October, with deadlines of 15 January, 15 April, and 15 August, respectively.
