Description:

NRL has developed microtubules with a fixed diameter of 0.5 micron and a length varying from 10 to 150 microns have proven effective for encapsulation of antifouling agents (biocides) that can be controllably released after the microtubules are incorporated into antifouling coatings. Tubule microstructures with entrapped biocides or natural repellents may be randomly distributed in these coatings to protect the structural integrity of the biocide while in the paint formulation. The resulting coatings are environmentally benign and rely on both the entrapped biocides and their slow release to the environment.
