The Thermospheric and Ionospheric Research and Applications (TIRA) Group of the Naval Research Laboratory studies the "weather" of the upper atmosphere and ionosphere using satellite and rocket-based optical remote sensing of naturally occuring dayglow and nightglow. Observations are used to study the composition, photochemistry and thermodynamics of the thermosphere and ionosphere, examine the temperature structure of the lower thermosphere for signatures of anthropogenic effects and global change and measure the composition and energy of precipitating ions in proton auroras.
