SES 2004 Presidential Rank Award of Meritorious Senior Professional - Dr. Elaine Oran for her pivotal contributions to a broad range of problems in combustion and propulsion, atmospheric physics, and solar physics and astrophysics.

2004 American Society of Materials Gold Medal - Dr. Bhakta Rath for "outstanding contributions in solid-state transformations, microstructure-property relationships and for visionary leadership in directing leading-edge research for national security."

Environmental Security Technology Certification Program Project-of-the-Year Award - Dr. Bruce Sartwell for his work on the replacement of hard chrome plating on aircraft landing gear using high-velocity, oxygen-fuel thermal spray coatings.

Sigma Xi Mid-Atlantic Regional Young Investigator Award for 2004 - Dr. William Amatucci for his work in the area of physical sciences and engineering.

Lloyd's Register Safer Ship Award from the Royal Institution of Naval Architects - Dr. Frederick Williams, Dr. Susan Rose-Pehrsson and Mr. John Farley for advanced damage control technology.
