Dr. Jay Eversole Receives Sigma Xi Award for Biological/Chemical Warfare Detection Optics and Leadership

On October 9, 2014, Captain Kenneth Szczublewski, on behalf of the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), awarded Dr. Jay Eversole the 2014 NRL-Edison Sigma Xi Applied Science Award. The citation reads, "In recognition of his research in aerosol optical diagnostic measurements, sensor development, and leadership contributions to DoD [Department of Defense] chemical and biological warfare defense."

Eversole is a leader in biological and chemical warfare defense technologies and programs for DoD. In particular, he was recognized for new techniques to optically characterize aerosols. His research allows for real-time interrogation of individual particles, maximizing resolution and the ability to discriminate among different targets.

Recently, he developed a new method and capability to consistently determine the performance of DoD biological warfare detection systems against a reliable standard. Additionally, a program he developed for single aerosol particle discrimination and classification using infrared absorption spectroscopy will transition to the Next Generation Chemical Detector program of record in 2015.

Eversole began and led an expert panel to study and evaluate biological weapon defense vulnerabilities for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency; he's also contributed to studies and reports for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the National Academy of Science, the U.S. Army, the Department of Homeland Security, and others.

Eversole's research spans single particle angular elastic scattering, Raman scattering, polarization effects in elastic scattering, automated imagery using elastic scatter, laser-induced fluorescence, and multiple wavelength laser excitation of fluorescent from single aerosol particles in situ, and infrared absorption spectroscopy using different spectral scattering. He's also contributed to aerosol science and airborne particle sampling.

Eversole came to NRL in 1975, after completing his PhD in Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He's led NRL's Aerosol Optics since December 2006.
