NRL Change of Command: Captain Anthony Ferrari relieves Captain Paul C. Stewart

By Dick Thompson

Captain Anthony Ferrari, USN, assumed the duties as the Naval Research Laboratory's thirty-seventh Commanding Officer during a formal Change of Command ceremony in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, August 30, 2012. Captain Ferrari succeeds Captain Paul C. Stewart, USN, who retired following four years as Commanding Officer of NRL, and 29 years of Naval service.

As Commanding Officer, Captain Ferrari directs the research efforts of over 2,500 NRL scientists and engineers who conduct a broadly-based multidisciplinary program of scientific research and advanced technological development in the areas of materials science, systems, ocean and atmospheric sciences, and space sciences for the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, and other federal agencies.

Captain Ferrari reported to NRL from the Office of Naval Research in Arlington, Virginia, where he served as the Deputy Director and Director of PMR-51, the Navy's Low Observable/Counter Low Observable Technology, Policy and Advanced project office from December 2008 through August 2012.
