The SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program is a combined educational and workforce development opportunity for STEM students. SMART offers scholarships for undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students pursuing a STEM degree. SMART builds future leaders in 24 STEM disciplines and is the largest education and workforce development initiative under the Department of Defense (DoD) STEM Program.

Scholarship recipients receive hands-on experience at one of over 200 DoD facilities during their internships and apply this knowledge as early career professionals. DoD facilities are at the forefront of innovation in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, autonomy, cyber, space, 5G, and other technology areas. SMART provides STEM students with the tools needed to pursue higher education and begin a rewarding career with the DoD. With a full scholarship, students pursuing STEM degrees will be able to focus on complex research to further the DoD's mission and create a lasting impact. Summer internships are performed at DoD facilities alongside scientists and engineers; these experiences prepare scholars for full-time employment and get them accustomed to working with the DoD.

Scholarship recipients receive full tuition, annual stipends, internships, and guaranteed employment with the DoD after graduation. SMART is a one-for-one commitment; for every year of degree funding, the scholar commits to working for a year with the DoD as a civilian employee.

Applications are open annually from August 1 through December 1.
