Dr. John McCormack Receives 2011 Editors' Citation for Excellence in Refereeing for Geophysical Research Letters

Dr. John McCormack of the Naval Research Laboratory's Space Science Division has been selected to receive the 2011 Editors' Citation for Excellence in Refereeing for Geophysical Research Letters (GRL). This award recognizes Dr. McCormack's contributions in maintaining the highest standard of scientific quality in GRL publications through the peer-review process, and in doing so highlights the world-class expertise of NRL researchers.

One of the most important aspects of scientific inquiry is the archival journal peer-review process. Scientific journals rely on members of the scientific community to provide accurate and conscientious reviews of submitted journal manuscripts. Because of the anonymous nature of the peer-review process, this service is also one of the least recognized.

In selecting Dr. John McCormack to receive the 2011 Editors' Citation for Excellence in Refereeing for Geophysical Research Letters (GRL), the publishers of GRL publicly express their gratitude to Dr. McCormack for his manuscript reviews, which have been proven particularly valuable in maintaining a high standard of journal publication technical quality.

Dr. McCormack, who joined the NRL SSD as a federal employee in September 2000, is an internationally recognized expert on stratospheric ozone, dynamics, and the influence of solar variability on the atmosphere. He works in the Geospace Science and Technology Branch, where his forefront research to study the atmospheric environment at ~10-100 km altitude, and his associated development of new global weather predictive technologies, is directed towards meeting emerging Navy and DoD battlespace environment forecasting needs.
