Chief Aviation Machinist's Mate Michael W. Seal Commissioned

By Donna McKinney

The Naval Research Laboratory's Scientific Development Squadron One (VXS-1) held a commissioning ceremony on February 1, 2012 for Chief Aviation Machinist's Mate Michael W. Seal. Chief Seal was commissioned to the rank of Ensign.

In his commissioning, Ensign Seal joins the officer ranks as a Limited Duty Officer. Limited Duty Officers provide a unique role in the U.S. Navy, serving as the technical experts within their specific fields and using their experience not only to benefit the development of enlisted sailors, but also that of the junior officers.

Prior to his commissioning ceremony, Chief Seal also received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal in recognition of his performance as material control officer and maintenance master chief onboard VXS-1 from July 1, 2010 to February 10, 2012. During this time, he was responsible for the timely and safe execution of all NP-3D maintenance, with his sailors performing 4,300 repairs and five large-scale inspections.
