Dr. Phil Valent, associate superintendent of the Marine Geosciences Division, was inducted into the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) Hall of Fame in May for a paper he coauthored in 1982.
This evening is devoted to honoring seven extraordinary papers that have withstood the test of time to provide innovation, direction and lasting impact on the design, construction or installation of offshore infrastructure, wrote Kathy Caldwell, president of ASCE, and Patrick Natale, ASCE executive director, in the event's program.
More than 10,000 papers have been presented at OTC since its inception in 1969. The Hall of Fame is reserved for those authors whose papers have maintained their significance and have left a lasting impact on the offshore industry.
Together with Vitoon Vivatrat and A.A. Ponterio, Valent authored The Influence of Chain Friction on Anchor Pile Design in 1982. The paper has become a basic reference in mooring line analysis.
Originally developed for anchor pile analysis, the paper's nonlinear governing differential equations, recommendations and practical solution methods are now used in design of nearly all anchor systems that involve mooring lines.
Valent received his doctorate in civil engineering with specialty in soil mechanics from Purdue University. He is a member of the Geo-Institute, American Society of Civil Engineers.
