WASHINGTON, D.C. - Elected Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) in 2014, U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) research physicist, Dr. Carl Stephen (Steve) Hellberg, was nominated for creative and influential contributions in the fields of strongly correlated materials, quantum dots, defects, and heterostructures. His work has concentrated on the physics of surfaces and interfaces, using density functional theory and has demonstrated that conditions on the surface of a thin film can have profound effects on the electronic behavior at the interface, including the establishment of a conducting layer, which allows for the development of nanoscale switches.
