WASHINGTON - MADISON, Wis. – This image from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-17 shows New Zealand in the lower left. The brownish-gray plume in the center is the large smoke aerosol mass that formed into the P1 plume that was generated during brush fires that ravaged southeastern Australia between Dec. 29, 2019 and Jan. 4, 2020. The white clouds below it are obscured due to the dense smoke. (Image by Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies/Space Science and Engineering Center)
