Study Finds Localized Water Release in Upper Mesosphere
POKER FLAT RESEARCH RANGE, Alaska (Jan. 26, 2018) A long-exposure view of the NASA “Super Soaker” rocket trail to its destination altitude of 53 miles, along with the Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) beam (green) used for temperature measurements and cloud detection. The launch is part of a NASA and U.S. Naval Research Laboratory study showing water vapor, a common launch byproduct of space traffic, can actively cool the mesosphere and induce the formation of mesospheric clouds.
