WASHINGTON - On October 5, 1954, an NRL-launched Viking rocket carrying a movie camera captured the first high-altitude images of a tropical storm over the Gulf of Mexico, sparking the interest of the U.S. Weather Bureau and the future of high-altitude weather reconnaissance. This mosaic is a compilation of images captured from an altitude of 100 miles above the Earth surface. [Released 11-1226-3531]. Also listed as file number 60834 (H-517).
