This bust of Thomas Edison, which graces NRL's front gate, was sculpted by Evelyn Beatrice Longman and presented to NRL by the Thomas Alva Edison Foundation, Inc. It was unveiled on December 3, 1953. Ms. Longman is seen here working on the bust of Thomas Edison for the Naval Research Laboratory in 1947, just five years before her death. The bust was completed in 1952. Ms. Longman was an accomplished sculptress who donated her time and skill to the wreaths, ornaments and lettering of the Lincoln Memorial so that the original design of the could be completed for its allotted cost.
