Washington D.C. - A pyrocumulonimbus (pyroCb) cloud generated by the Creek Fire rises into the stratosphere over California on Sept. 5, 2020. PyroCb events form when extreme wildfire heat drives smoke and ash high into the atmosphere, creating powerful updrafts, downdrafts and high-altitude smoke exhaust that can affect weather patterns and atmospheric conditions far from the fire itself.
