The section conducts applied research and engineering in the areas of cathodic protection design, materials performance in the marine environment, ballast water treatment S&T, biofouling control and remediation and many related R&D tasks focused towards 21st century ship/submarine design engineering. The mission for corrosion engineering section includes RDT&E in direct support of current and future fleet concerns for condition based maintenance and programs, provide long-term engineering solutions and evaluation of materials for improved performance, cost-savings and life-cycle management, provide corrosion expertise in areas of seawater cathodic protection, materials characterization, metallic/microbiological corrosion, exposure testing, and atmospheric/environmental degradation. The section is also responsible for managing and maintaining the NRL Marine Corrosion and Coatings Facility and associated personnel.
