The PSS was established within the Department of Defense to allow the direct hire appointment of students to positions in professional and administrative occupations.

Appointments can be NO (Administrative Professional), and NC (Administrative Support) career track positions, however, conversion after graduation must be to a NO position. Post-secondary students are initially appointed to a term appointment for a period that is expected to last for more than one year, but no more than 4 years.
 
Eligibility & Qualifications:
NRL seeks students enrolled on a full-time basis at a qualifying educational institution and have completed at least one full year of the academic program. Applicants must provide proof of continuous enrollment at the time of application. Selectees must maintain eligibility for a security clearance and meet any OPM qualification standards required by the position.
 
GPA Requirement:
Students in the NO (Administrative Professional), and NC (Administrative Support) must maintain a 2.5 GPA (based on 4.0 scale)
 
Work Schedule/Leave:
Students can work full-time or part-time. Students may work year-round or during the summers and go on LWOP to return to school in the fall and spring. Students will earn 4 hours of annual leave and 4 hours of sick leave each pay period (prorated for part-time work schedules).
 
Conversion upon Graduation:
Students may be non-competitively converted to permanent positions in the NO career track provided they meet the OPM qualifications for the series. Conversion is not guaranteed or mandatory. Salary is set commensurate with selectee’s background, experience, and market considerations. The Naval Research Laboratory is under an approved Personnel Demonstration Project.
