The ex-USS SHADWELL is the Navy's full-scale Damage Control RDT&E Facility dedicated to integrated Research, Development, Test and Evaluation studies on active and passive fire protection, flooding and chemical (simulants) defense. The integrated approach combines scientific measurement/modeling with the performance of men, materials, equipment, sensors, systems, doctrine, tactics, and command and control under realistic, time-critical situations. Programmatically, ex-USS SHADWELL is the facility that enables the ultimate development of fire models and other predictive tools, agents, systems, sensors and technology stemming from basic and theoretical concepts acquired from research and development. Uniquely, experiments and concepts involving hardware/software are evaluated in which the end users, such as the Systems Commands, Navy Warfare Centers/Laboratories, the training community, fleet commands and OPNAV staffs, also observe and participate.
