WASHINGTON - Matthew Wolford, U.S. Naval Research Laboratory research chemist, inspects the Electra argon- fluoride (ArF) laser. The ArF laser is the shortest wavelength laser (193 nm) that can scale to the high energies and power needed for laser fusion. Electra has demonstrated the world’s highest ArF laser energy, and is providing the technical and scientific basis for constructing larger systems. (U.S. Navy photo by Jonathan Steffen)
