The Immersive Simulation Section (Code 5582) performs research in the design, development, and testing of advanced user interfaces for the Navy and Marine Corps. Our work emphasizes real time interaction and support among teams of individuals carrying out complex tasks, goals, and missions. Our research areas of focus span the gamut, ranging from improving dismounted infantry simulation to remotely monitoring the interaction of unmanned aerial system operators in control stations.

Our section consists of two elements: the Immersive Simulation Laboratory (ISL), and the Warfighter Human System Integration Laboratory (WHSIL). The ISL tends to emphasize the design and development of user interfaces, while the WHSIL typically focuses on the analysis and measured assessment of the user with human in the loop systems. Both laboratories have developed advanced interfaces and evaluated user performance.
