About

NRL's Information Technology Division conducts basic research, exploratory development, and advanced technology demonstrations in the collection, transmission, and processing of information to provide a basis for improving the conduct of military operations. Funded by a variety of customers and sponsors within the Department of Defense, U.S. government and industry, ITD’s research program spans the areas of Artificial Intelligence, High Assurance Systems, Modeling and Simulation, Virtual Reality, Human/Computer Interaction, Computer and Communication Networks, Communication Systems, Transmission Technology, and High Performance Computing.

Background

NRL’s Information Technology Division is a direct descendant of the Laboratory’s Radio Division, one of NRL’s two original research Divisions when the Laboratory was commissioned in 1923. In fact, ITD’s roots precede the founding of NRL since the NRL Radio Division was formed by consolidating two already existing Naval Laboratories, the Naval Radio Telegraphic Laboratory (established in 1908) and the Naval Aircraft Radio Laboratory (established in 1918). These two Laboratories were consolidated into the NRL Radio Division.

Core Capabilities

From basic research through engineering development, the ITD, under the Systems Directorate, expands operational capabilities and provides materiel support to Fleet and Marine Corps missions. The emphasis is on technology, devices, systems, and know-how to acquire and move warfighting information and to deny these capabilities to the enemy.

  • Free Space Photonic Communications Office - Free space optical communication has emerged in recent years as an attractive alternative to the conventional radio frequency (RF) approach. This emergence is due to the increasing maturity of lasers and compact optical systems that enable exploitation of the inherent advantages of the much shorter wavelengths characteristic of optical and near infrared carriers.

  • Adversarial Modeling and Exploitation Office - Conducts research in the development of techniques, technologies, and tools to support understanding and modeling of adversarial behavior. The focus is on understanding the behavior of individuals, groups, societies, and/or cultures as it relates to the execution of operational missions.

  • Networks and Communication Systems - Serves as the Navy's lead organization in the discovery and innovation, development, evaluation, integration, and maturation of network and communications systems science and technology, with an eye toward developing capabilities that have military relevance and transition to the warfighter.

  • Center for High Assurance Computer Systems - CHACS conducts research and development in the areas of Information Assurance (IA) and Cyber Security. In this role the Center also provides IA research support to other Navy activities, as well as maintains liaison with the National Security Agency and other US and International Defense, Industrial, and Academic research labs.

  • Transmission Technology Branch - Conducts a research and development program directed toward the improvement of information transmission and reception between surface, air, submerged, and space platforms.

  • Information Management and Decision Architectures Branch - IMDA uses technology from the physical, computational, visualization, social, and management sciences to perform research in information technology that will advance the understanding, modeling, prototyping, evaluation, development, and transition of more effective human-machine, human-human, and human-organization systems that discover, process, disseminate, visualize, and present information in support of military decision-making.

  • Center for Computational Science - Conducts research and development to advance computing and communications systems to solve Navy problems. The Center accomplishes this mission through a balanced focus on service, research, and development.
